Preparing to Launch: The Ultimate SME Business Checklist

Launching a new business is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Having recently supported an SME to launch a new property maintenance business, I was reminded just how many moving parts there are. From developing your brand to putting the right systems and marketing in place, here’s a practical checklist to help make sure you’re ready for launch.

Brand Identity - More Than Just a Logo

Your brand isn’t simply your logo or colour palette. It’s your business’s personality - how you communicate, the experience customers receive and the impression you leave at every touchpoint. From the language you use to how you answer the phone, every interaction should reinforce your values and what makes your business different.

Strategy and Planning

Before investing time and money into marketing, take a step back and create a plan. A marketing strategy doesn’t have to be 50 pages long, but it should answer some fundamental questions:

  • What are your business goals? Make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound).

  • What is your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and what makes your business different?

  • What products or services are you offering, and how will they be priced?

  • Who is your target audience, and what matters most to them?

  • Which marketing channels will help you reach your ideal customers?

  • What key messages will communicate the value of your products or services throughout the customer journey?

  • How will you engage customers at every touchpoint, from enquiries and quotations through to bookings, payments, reviews, aftercare and handling complaints?

  • What marketing and corporate assets will you need?

  • What budget do you have available for marketing?

  • What activities will you deliver and when?

  • How will you measure success? Define your Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and track enquiries, conversions, sales and channel performance so you can continually review and improve your marketing.

Useful Research

Supporting your strategy with research will help you make informed decisions. Consider including:

  • Competitor analysis

  • SWOT analysis

  • PESTLE analysis

  • A review of the micro and macro environment

Business Operations

Putting the right operational systems in place from the beginning will save time, improve efficiency and support future growth. Consider the systems you’ll need for:

  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

  • Accounting and invoicing

  • Project management

  • File storage and document management

  • Data backup and security

Legal Compliance

Before opening your doors, make sure the legal essentials are covered. This may include:

  • Business registration

  • Appropriate business insurance

  • GDPR and data protection compliance

  • Customer contracts and terms and conditions

  • Privacy and cookie policies

  • Any licences or certifications required for your industry

Build Your Marketing Foundations

With your strategy complete, it’s time to bring your marketing to life. Ensure you have:

  • A professional website

  • A Google Business Profile

  • Social media profiles

  • A professional business email address

  • A search engine optimised website and presence on relevant online directories

  • Google Analytics and Google Search Console set up to monitor website performance

  • Marketing assets such as brochures, business stationery, email templates, branded photography, video and merchandise where appropriate

  • A launch campaign, including advertising, PR, events or promotional activity

Preparing for Launch Day

Before you announce your new business to the world, take a final look through your checklist:

  • Test your website and contact forms

  • Check all links and contact details

  • Schedule your social media posts

  • Let your network know you’re launching

  • Make sure you’re ready to respond quickly to enquiries

Final Thoughts

Remember, business launches aren’t always perfect. Focus on getting the fundamentals right, then continue learning from your customers and refining your marketing over time. A well-planned launch gives your business the best possible start-but your long-term success will come from consistently delivering a great customer experience and adapting as your business grows.
