Stepping into the Limelight: The Art of Self-Promotion

As a marketeer, I’ve always been content with my role of making others shine – whether that’s people, businesses, products, or services. Now, as I step into the world of self-employment, I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and promoting myself, my skills, my experience, and the services I offer.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m not exactly an introvert. However, while I find it easy to shout about the value and strengths of others, I struggle to do the same for myself. So, here’s where I apply the principles of marketing - by starting with a simple question: What do my potential clients value about me?

1) Who are my core target markets?

Sole traders and small businesses. Why? Larger companies typically have the resources for a dedicated marketing team or a bigger budget to work with an established agency. Small businesses, on the other hand, are often led by entrepreneurs who have limited resources and are more open to working with someone early-on in their own business journey.

2) What services can I offer to small businesses?

As a marketing generalist, I’m a ‘jack of all trades.’ I’ve led B2B, B2C, and B2G marketing campaigns across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors in a wide range of industries. My core strength lies in my versatility and my ability to apply the fundamental principles of marketing to support businesses in achieving their goals. While I’m not an expert in one specific area, I can turn my hand to almost any aspect of marketing and offer end-to-end business support - from strategy to implementation to reporting. That’s why my key services include:

  • Marketing strategy to provide direction aligned with business goals.

  • Campaign planning and management to attract, engage, and retain customers.

  • Content creation to engage audiences and build brand reputation.

  • Copywriting to craft compelling narratives.

  • Graphic design to create branded marketing assets.

3) What value do I offer small businesses?

The experience, skills, and knowledge I’ve gained from over 20 years of professional marketing and communications work in large organisations. Personalised support from a dedicated marketing business partner who can deliver end-to-end marketing services. You get all the benefits of an in-house marketing specialist who truly understands your business, without the hefty cost.

So, here I am – not the type to blow my own trumpet, but happily banging my own drum. I’m confident that my services will be of real value to small businesses. And I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone to promote them.
