Marketing 101: A Lesson from a Seven-Year-Old

When my first set of business cards arrived, I think my children were more excited than I was. At 5 and 7 years old, they struggled to grasp the concept of a “marketing consultant,” but they understood one thing: I would be my own boss. Then something amazing happened - my daughter revealed she has a natural affinity for marketing.

“Mummy, I want to help you. I’m going to create some posters and put them up in the school and around the community so people will sign up. Then we can do some posts online,” she said.

That evening, as I prepped dinner, she proudly presented seven carefully crafted, almost identical, hand-written posters. She had copied my logo, mimicked the font style and colours (branding!), attempted a “call to action” without fully understanding what it meant, and even included contact details (now blurred out for obvious reasons).

I couldn’t believe it. Without any real understanding of marketing, she had displayed a natural talent for it. When she heard I was setting up my own business, she wanted to help. She instinctively understood my target audience - small businesses - and decided the best way to reach them was through both print and online channels (marketing strategy and campaign planning!).

What just happened? My 7-year-old just showed me she has real potential to do my job. Maybe HB Marketing Solutions will evolve into a family business someday.

I can’t find the right words to express how proud I am of her. Simply…wow.
