How Early Jobs Shaped My Career
Growing up in the West Midlands, I’ve always had a strong sense of community - and a passion for helping people succeed. Reflecting on my own career journey, I realise how much my early jobs shaped the person I am today. Each role taught me lessons that went far beyond the day-to-day tasks, building skills and values that continue to guide me in my professional life.
First steps in the workforce: My first job at the local OneStop store, putting supplements into Sunday newspapers, may have seemed small, but it taught me the importance of efficiency and how structured processes can make a huge difference.
Learning the art of customer care: Working in a bridal shop through my teenage years refined my customer service skills. I learned to listen closely, understand people’s needs, and tailor my approach to exceed expectations - a lesson that has proven invaluable in every professional interaction since.
Developing patience and responsibility: Babysitting my neighbour’s children was less about diapers and more about mastering patience, responsibility, and conflict management. These skills translate into any team or leadership role, even outside childcare.
Thriving under pressure: Behind the bar in a busy nightclub, I learned to juggle multiple tasks at once, remain calm under pressure, and adapt quickly to fast-changing environments. It was the ultimate training ground for resilience.
Each of these experiences laid the foundation for my career in marketing, equipping me with a strong work ethic, practical skills, and the confidence to tackle new challenges.
Now, it’s my turn to give back - to support the very SMEs that gave me my start, to help nurture talent, and to create opportunities for the next generation to grow, just as I did.
